Historic Evolvement

Qionghai is aged teeming with elite. In the year of A.D.660, Lehui county was established from which the northwestern part was split off in the year of 1291 to independ as Huitong county. In the year of 1914, it was renamed Qiongdong county. In December 1958, the original Qionghai county was formed by combining Qiongdong, Lehui and Wanning. In the next year, Wanning was ruled out. In November1992, the State Department of People's Republic of China granted to supersede the organizational structure of Qionghai from county to city.

Ethnic Dialect

Natives of Qionghai mainly speak Hainan dialect. Beside Han nation, a few minorities inhabit in Qionghai, Miaozhu, Lizhu for example. The local folk culture and art is diverse including Qiong Opera, Miao Zhu Mountain Song, Dragon Dance, Lion Dance, Lantern Dance, Coconut Carving, Embroidery and Weaving etc.
